It appears as if Rich Rodriguez needs to give Tulane an answer by the end of the weekend. If he declines the offer then look for Tulane to look towards Curtis Johnson, Wide Receivers Coach New Orleans Saints or Mike Haywood, former head coach at Miami Ohio. Sources have said that Mike Haywood is the runner-up choice to Rich Rodriguez so look for a decision to be made by Wednesday of this week.
Urban Meyer's name has been swirling around college football and Columbus, OH since Jim Tressell resigned last May. Meyer has a house in Columbus and his daughter attends graduate school at Ohio State. The stove has gotten really hot in regards to Meyer being named the next head coach at Ohio State and it may happen sooner than later.

Above are the known candidates in play for the head coaching vacancy at Tulane. It appeared that Tommy Bowden was offered the job and has since declined the offer. Most rumors out there have Rich Rodriguez as the likely suitor for the Green Wave who wants to hire their next head coach before the end of November heading into the crucial recruiting time period. Rich Rodriguez has an outstanding resume that includes two very successful years as Tommy Bowden’s offensive coordinator in 1998 and 1999. Michael Haywood is an interesting prospect who has an impeccable resume that includes eight years at LSU and has had tremendous success recruiting the state of Louisiana. He did a wonderful job turning around the Miami Ohio program that was woeful before Haywood took over winning the MAC championship in only his second year at the helm of the program. He then took the Pittsburgh job before getting arrested on a domestic dispute with the mother of his baby. Pittsburgh fired him before he coached a football game for them. Curtis Johnson is a Sean Payton disciple who has spent the last five years as his wide receivers coach in New Orleans including a Super Bowl championship season. Johnson spent most of his coaching career at Miami and he could bring another important recruiting aspect to this process. He is from New Orleans and deserves an opportunity. The three MAC coaches, Pete Lembo, Dave Clawson, and Tim Beckman appear to be “B” list candidates if any of the top three fall through.
Recommendation: Rich Rodriguez
Runner-Up: Curtis Johnson
Third Choice: Michael Haywood

Tulane has also made inquiries about three MAC conference head coaches: Tim Beckman at Toledo, Pete Lembo at Ball State, and Dave Clawson at Bowling Green. Sun Belt Coaching Rankings
1. Hugh Freeze, Arkansas State
Hard to argue with the success Freeze as had this year at Arkansas State. He has been a winner everywhere he goes and look for him to move quickly up the “hot” coaches list.
2. Larry Blakeney, Troy
No one has won more games in the Sun Belt than Blakeney as his Troy program has won at least a share of the Sun Belt five times. This has been a down year for the program but look for Troy to re-emerge in the future.
3. Mark Hudspeth, Louisiana-Lafayette
Another young hot name in the college coaching world that had done a tremendous job in his first year at Lafayette scoring more points than anyone else in the conference.
4. Dan McCarney, North Texas
Old school coach who is just what North Texas needs to re-emerge in the conference as a contender. Has won four games this season while it took Todd Dodge four seasons to win a total of eight.
5. Mario Cristobal, Florida International
Former Miami assistant who is young and an up-and-coming coach, however, he has been largely inconsistent since taking over the program. He has recruited very well but has not taking advantage of the fertile recruiting grounds in regards to the on the field play. I do believe Cristobal is an excellent coach, but he needs to win more to gain ground on Hudspeth and Freeze.
6. Willie Taggart, Western Kentucky
Taggart could be much higher on this list considering his turn around this season after only winning two games in his first season. He is a Harbaugh disciple (is there a hotter name in coaching right now than Harbaugh?) who knows how to win and is really winning battles in recruiting. He has recruited Florida better than most ACC, Big 10, and Big East schools. I believe Taggart will sky-rocket up this list with another season.
7. Howard Schnellenberger, Florida Atlantic
Schnellenberger is a legendary coach from his time at Louisville, Miami, and Oklahoma but the end of the road is near. There is no excuse for a school in Florida to be 0-9 on the season; however it was very difficult to put someone who has had so much success in his career this low.
8. Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee State
Stockstill has had one exceptional season in 2009, but after losing multiple assistants in the last few years, he is struggling to keep it together. No one recruits harder and more aggressively than Stockstill but his program is really struggling this season.
9. Todd Berry, Louisiana-Monroe
Puzzling hire when Berry was named the head coach after the 2009 season. He had some success at Illinois State but really struggled at Army and hasn’t exactly put up great numbers as an offensive coordinator since. He has a lot of work to do at Monroe whom continues to be a bottom dweller in the weakest conference in the bowl subdivision.

Hugh Freeze’s role in the movie “Blind Side” has made him definitely recognizable around college football. This is not the reason why will know his name for years to come. Freeze can flat out coach football as he has Arkansas State on track to be in their first bowl game since entering the bowl subdivision in 2000. He won two state championships and had almost 100 wins as a high school coach. He then spearheaded Ole Miss’ recruiting efforts for two seasons that led to Houston Nutt’s early success at Ole Miss. He then took Lambuth University in Tennessee to the program’s best two season finishes in school history. At Arkansas State, his offense in 2010 set multiple team records before taking over as head coach in 2011. In 2011, Arkansas State is undefeated in the Sun Belt with only one test left on the season when they take on Louisiana-Lafayette on November 12. Arkansas State won 4 games in the previous two seasons before this year. Freeze is an energetic and innovative football coach that has a bright future. Arkansas State will not be Freeze’s last stop.
